A power station that sits unused for months between camping trips or storm seasons needs a slightly different care routine than one in regular rotation — get it wrong and you'll find a degraded or dead unit right when you need it most.
The right storage charge level
Store a LiFePO4 power station at roughly 40-60% charge, not full and not empty. Storing at 100% for extended periods puts more chronic stress on the cells than a partial charge, while storing fully empty risks the battery drifting into a deep-discharge state as it slowly self-discharges over time. If your unit is currently full or empty, use or top it up to roughly the midpoint before putting it away.
Temperature matters more than almost anything else
Heat is the single biggest factor in long-term battery degradation — a hot garage, attic, or car trunk will age a stored battery meaningfully faster than a climate-moderate closet or basement. Cold storage is safer for the battery itself but can trigger a temperature lockout on charging (see our troubleshooting guide) if you try to recharge it while still cold — bring it to room temperature first.
Recharge on a schedule, don't just forget about it
| Storage duration | Recommended check-in |
|---|---|
| 1-2 months | Check charge level; top up if below ~30% |
| 3-6 months | Check and top up to 40-60% every 3 months |
| 6+ months | Same 3-month cadence — don't extend the gap further |
Even at rest, batteries slowly self-discharge — a unit left completely untouched for 6-12 months can drift low enough to stress the cells or, in rare cases, trigger a protective state that needs a specific wake-up charging process. A quick quarterly check avoids this entirely.
Before the season starts again
Bring the unit to room temperature, charge it fully, and run a small test load (a lamp or fan for 10-15 minutes) before you actually need it — this surfaces any issue while you still have time to troubleshoot or contact support, rather than discovering it during the first outage or camping trip of the season. See our LiFePO4 lifespan guide for the habits that keep it healthy in regular use, too.
