
Most of what shortens a power station's life isn't a defect — it's a handful of everyday habits that stress the battery or the electronics faster than necessary. None of them require any special tools or expertise.
Keep it within its temperature comfort zone
LiFePO4 batteries handle a wide range, but consistently charging or heavily discharging in extreme heat (over 104°F/40°C) or cold (under 32°F/0°C) accelerates degradation more than almost anything else you control. Charge indoors or in shade when possible, and avoid leaving a unit charging in a hot car or direct summer sun.
Don't let it live at 100% or 0%
Like most lithium batteries, LiFePO4 cells last longer when cycled in a moderate range rather than parked at a full charge for weeks or repeatedly run down to empty. For a unit in daily rotation, keeping it roughly between 20% and 90% when practical reduces long-term stress — though for emergency-ready units, staying topped up for readiness is the right tradeoff; see our long-term storage guide for that specific case.
Clean the vents and check the fan
- Wipe dust from intake and exhaust vents every few months — blocked airflow makes the internal fan work harder and run hotter under load
- Listen for unusual fan noise (grinding, rattling) which can signal debris or an early fan issue worth addressing before it fails during use
- Keep it a few inches clear of walls or enclosed cabinets while charging or under heavy load, so it can actually vent
Keep firmware updated
Most current power stations support firmware updates via a companion app, and manufacturers regularly ship updates that improve charging efficiency, battery management accuracy and safety cutoffs. Check for updates every few months rather than assuming the out-of-box firmware is final.
Cycle it fully every so often
An occasional full discharge-to-recharge cycle (every 1-3 months for a unit that mostly sits at partial charge) helps the battery management system recalibrate its percentage readout, which can drift out of sync with actual charge level over many partial cycles.
