Two reasons: in most jurisdictions it is regulated work a licensed electrician must perform, and it is the one part of the system that stays energised from the utility no matter what you switch off. Against a professional installation costing $10,000-15,000 more than DIY, spending $500-2,000 on the regulated portion keeps roughly 85-95% of the saving. That is the trade that makes hybrid DIY the sensible default rather than a compromise.

Why this specific task and not the rest

You can de-energise every other part of a solar system. Cover the panels and the DC side goes quiet. Switch off the disconnects and the inverter output stops. The service panel is different: it is fed from the utility transformer, and that feed does not have a switch you control. Working inside it means working near conductors that are live regardless of anything you do.

There is also the 120% rule. Finding one who will take the job

Be aware that some electricians decline to connect work they did not install, because they are being asked to put their licence behind someone else's wiring. That is a reasonable position, not an insult. Approaches that work:

  • Say up front that it is a DIY solar install and you want the service connection only. Discovering this on site wastes everyone's time.
  • Have your permit and plan set ready — an electrician can see immediately whether the design is sound, and a stamped plan makes the job an easy yes.
  • Ask them to review the DC side before you finish it. Many will, for an hour's rate, and it is the cheapest insurance in the project.
  • Look for solar experience specifically. An electrician who has done interconnections knows the utility's requirements and the inspector's habits.
  • Get two or three quotes. This job varies more in price than it should.

The hour that pays for itself

Even where you could legally do everything yourself — an off-grid system, or a jurisdiction with broad owner-builder provisions — paying an electrician for a single review visit before you close anything up is worth it. They will spot an undersized conductor, a missing bond, a wrong overcurrent rating or a labelling gap in minutes, and each of those is a failed inspection or worse.
