Notice that sales and customer acquisition is often as large a line as labour. A meaningful share of what a homeowner pays for professional solar is the cost of having been sold to — which is the clearest structural argument for DIY, and the reason the gap is so wide.
What you give up
- The workmanship warranty. Manufacturer warranties on panels and inverters generally survive a DIY install. The installer's warranty on the installation itself — roof penetrations, mounting, wiring — does not exist if there is no installer. A leak in year three is yours.
- Permit and interconnection handling. Installers do this daily and know the local officials. A first-timer's application is more likely to be returned for corrections, and each round trip is weeks.
- Design liability. If a professional undersizes the system or specifies incompatible equipment, that is their problem. If you do, it is yours, after the equipment is already bought.
- Speed. A professional crew mounts an 8 kW array in one to three days. A first-time DIY installer working weekends realistically takes several.
- A single point of accountability. When a professional system underperforms, one company is responsible. When a DIY system does, you are diagnosing across four vendors.

At 50-95 hours to save $12,000, DIY works out around $125-240 an hour before counting the satisfaction of understanding your own system. That is a strong rate for most people — but it is genuinely 50-95 hours, and the failure mode is not doing it slowly, it is abandoning it half-finished with panels in the garage.
The hybrid route most people overlook
These are not the only two options. A middle path that works well: buy the kit yourself, do the racking and panel mounting, and hire a licensed electrician for the electrical work and the service-panel tie-in. You capture most of the savings, the regulated work is done by someone licensed to do it, and the permit application carries an electrician's name — which some jurisdictions effectively require anyway.
Expect $500-2,000 for the electrical portion, still leaving the large majority of the DIY saving intact. For off-grid systems with no utility connection, even that is often unnecessary.
