Home solar battery system eligible for state incentives
State incentives can meaningfully offset an installed battery system's cost.

Incentive programs for home solar batteries change frequently — state budgets, program caps and eligibility rules shift year to year, so treat any specific list as a starting point for research, not a locked-in guarantee.

States that have historically led on solar battery incentives

California, through programs like the Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP), has historically offered some of the strongest state-level battery incentives, particularly for households in high fire-risk areas. Other states with track records of meaningful solar/battery incentives include New York, Massachusetts, and several in the Northeast with strong renewable energy targets.

Federal incentives apply on top of state programs

The federal residential clean energy credit has historically covered a meaningful percentage of battery storage costs (with or without paired solar) regardless of state, and can typically be combined with state and utility incentives — see our rebates guide for the current federal program details.

How to check what's actually available to you

  • Check your state energy office or public utilities commission website directly for current programs
  • Ask your installer — reputable solar/battery installers track current incentive programs as part of their quoting process
  • Check DSIRE (Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency), a commonly used nationwide incentive tracking resource
  • Confirm program funding caps — some popular programs run out of allocated funds before the program year ends
