The common fear is that installing solar yourself voids the equipment warranties. Mostly it does not: manufacturer product warranties on panels and inverters generally cover defects regardless of who installed them. The coverage you actually put at risk is different, and the biggest exposure is not the panels at all — it is your roof.

The workmanship warranty is not voided so much as never created — there is no installer to stand behind the work, so a leak, a loose attachment or a wiring fault is yours. That is a known and accepted part of the DIY trade. The roof warranty is the one people do not see coming.

The roof warranty problem

Many roofing manufacturers and most roofing contractors' workmanship warranties are voided by penetrations made by anyone other than a certified installer. Since a roof-mounted array means drilling through the weather barrier dozens of times, this is a real exposure — and it is worse than losing an equipment warranty, because a roof failure is a five-figure repair.

Three ways to handle it. Check the actual warranty document before drilling, because terms vary and some allow properly flashed penetrations. Have a roofer do the flashing and attachments while you do everything else, which often preserves coverage. Or choose a ground mount, which sidesteps the issue entirely — one of its underrated advantages.

Four mistakes that genuinely void equipment coverage

  1. Exceeding the inverter's maximum input voltage. A string within limits in summer can exceed it on a cold clear morning, because panel voltage rises as temperature falls. Damage from overvoltage is an installation error, not a defect, and manufacturers reject those claims — with the data logs to support it.
  2. Operating outside stated environmental limits. Mounting an inverter in direct sun or without the manual's clearances causes thermal failures the manufacturer will not cover.
  3. Improper grounding. Some warranties explicitly require code-compliant grounding, and it is also the item most likely to fail inspection anyway.
  4. Physical damage during installation. Standing on panels, over-torquing clamps, and micro-cracks from mishandling are all installation damage rather than defects. Micro-cracks are the insidious one: invisible at first, showing up as degraded output years later.

The certified-installer clause

A minority of manufacturers — more often for batteries and complete systems than for individual panels — require certified installation for the full warranty term, or offer an extended warranty only when a certified installer does the work. Read this before buying, not after.

Protecting yourself

  • Read the actual warranty documents for panels, inverter, racking and your roof before buying anything
  • Keep your permit, inspection sign-off and electrician's invoice — documentation of a permitted, inspected installation is what makes a claim credible
  • Photograph the installation as you go, especially flashing and bonding before anything is covered
  • Calculate cold-weather Voc and keep the working, since overvoltage is the most commonly rejected claim
  • Register the equipment with the manufacturers; some warranties require registration within a window
  • Tell your home insurer the array is installed and permitted

The pattern across all of this is that a permitted, inspected DIY installation is treated very differently from an undocumented one — by manufacturers, insurers and future buyers alike. It is the strongest argument for not skipping the paperwork, beyond the legal one.
